Compare and contrast
I chose to do my compare and contrast on breast milk versus formula. I myself prefer to breast feed my children as it is beneficial in more ways than one. My first daughter was breastfed till almost the age of two. My second will hopefully be as long, but hopefully the weening will be easier the second time around. As there are benefits to formula feeding, I do find more in breastfeeding. As some mothers can't produce milk, I choose to take full advantage of the gift that was given to me. What inspired me to choose this subject is the health of my children and myself.

Fish Cheeks vs Superman an Me
"Fish Cheeks" Amy Tan (p110-111)
This article was a short story about a girl being raised by a family who took much pride in their Chinese culture, living in America. She speaks of embarrassment when her family had invited an American family over for Christmas eve. She had a crush on the boy of the family that was invited, and was nervous of the difference between their Chinese tradition and the American tradition. Amy speaks at the end of her story about the valuable lesson her mother had taught her. Although it wasn't for many years down the road that she understood the meaning of understanding and knowing her cultural background. She is now thankful for having experienced such an event, now able to take pride in her family's background.
"Superman and Me" Sherman Alexie (p582-585)
This article was a short story about a Indian boy who was raised to believe that his people were less than those not of the same culture. He tells of his fathers love for reading, and his love for his father, being his inspiration. His father always bringing home books, leaving stacks of books scattered throughout the house, and finally building bookshelves. This led him to wanting to be just like his father, picking up his fathers books and pretending to read, even when he didn't know how. Teaching himself to read at the age of three, by reading pictures, assuming that the words were just narrating them. He pushes himself to learn more and more through reading. Resulting to him growing into not only a writer, but a man wanting to share his love for knowledge, and inspiration to become great with other children on Indian reservations.
I have chosen to write about Amy Tan's "Fish Cheeks". Although I cannot really relate, I am Filipino born and raised in America by my American family. So much of me wishes that I will one day learn my heritage, and the background of my culture.

Overwhelming Joy
As I get closer the anticipation is killing me. I've never felt so close before. So comforted just by the glory and presence that I feel here. Butterflies in my tummy, the excitement compares to that of none other. I park my car and walk through the double doors. Peaceful calming music flows through the building. The joy of many others fills the room. Huge smiles from the friendliest of faces everywhere I turn. My heart is warm. Walking through the room I feel so much love. The band begins to play, the lyrics shown on the screen. The front of the room becomes crowded with bodies of those full of happiness and joy. The sound of voices cheering and singing along with the band. People dancing, clapping, laughing, singing. I can't help but smile. So relaxed and full of joy I've waited for this all week. How can anybody sit during all this commotion? The energy in the room is so contagious not a person is standing still. The peace, the love, the joy, is being passed from one another like a rapid disease. This is my happy place. This is my safe spot. I've never had such a strong connection.

Why we lie
1. "Why we lie" isn't really based on the reason behind lying. But based on studies (performed mostly on college students) showing the amount of people who lied or were dishonest in a controlled situation versus an opportunity to get away with it with no given evidence.
2. Most people cheat, but not by much. What is our given motivation to be honest/dishonest as often as we are?
3. In paragraph 16, Ariely quotes a joke that he has heard once before. This is my favorite part because it is a perfect example of situations where dishonesty is noticed not only by ourselves but by others. In the example used was when the commandment out of the bible "Thou shall not steal" was spoken during service, those guilty of theft no matter how big or small the situation in their life, couldn't make eye contact with anyone. I think that the meaning of this paragraph is to help people recognize that dishonesty is such a normal thing these days, that people need to be reminded of their behavior. People lie without recognizing they are doing anything wrong. Lying and being dishonest was such a regular behavior for the man who had lost his bike. When the commandment "Thou shall not commit adultery" was spoken, he was reminded of where he left his bike because he was reminded of the dishonest routine he had gotten so used to blocking out, that he forgot that's where he last had his bike.

English 101 Introduction
Hello English 101,
My name is Validia and i am a 26 year old married woman with a two year old daughter and one on the way. This is my first time attending school and being able to have time to focus on just that. My daughter is full time in headstart giving me time to work on my own school work while my husband is at work. Our baby number two is due after the end of this quarter in April. Perfect timing if you ask me. I honestly can't say my strengths or weaknesses in reading and writing considering I haven't attended school in years. I am currently unemployed which is extremely weird to me because I have been working for so long. But what I like about being unemployed at the moment is that I can focus on school instead of work, school, home, etc. I am totally new to this whole blogging thing, have never done it in my life. Thank you for the chance to introduce myself, hope to have a great year.
Thank you,
